Between 1887 and 1917 thirteen paintings by Johannes Vermeer and several other works wrongly attributed to him entered American collections. Continuing demand for Vermeer’s rare pictures--thirty-six are known today--created a niche market during the 1920s and 1930s for forgers, the most gifted and notorious of whom was the Dutch artist Han van Meegeren. Jonathan Lopez, author of a biography of Van Meegeren, considers the differences between Vermeers painted in the 1650s and 1660s and "Vermeers" made in the twentieth century.
